With the end of the Texas Book Festival, the bulk of my promotion for A Wrinkle in Time is over. October has been an exhausting, wonderful experience, and I want to take a moment to thank some of the people who made the book’s debut a success.

- My editor, Margaret Ferguson, Ms. L’Engle’s estate, and everyone at FSG/Macmillan, without whom the book wouldn’t exist.
- My agent, Judy Hansen, for ensuring that I had the resources to do it justice.
- My husband Bryan, who held down the fort while I galloped around the country.
- Gina Gagliano, who dealt with the marketing.
- All the reviewers who reviewed it, especially Film Crit Hulk.
- The bookstores and comic stores who hosted signings: Criminal Records in Atlanta, Spellbound Children’s Bookshop in Asheville, Chapel Hill Comics in Chapel Hill, and Austin Books in Austin.
- The National Book Festival, Texas Book Festival, Litquake, and Wizard World Austin.

And most of all, thank you to the wonderful fans of A Wrinkle in Time. I met so many of you, of all ages, and I loved hearing what the book has meant to you throughout your lives.

Comics is a tough racket, and for the last year-and-a-bit I was convinced that my career had run its course. Because of the reception the book has received, I no longer think that’s true. I’m optimistic about my future in this weird, frustrating, inspiring little industry. I know, now, that there are readers out there, the reluctant readers I’ve heard so much about, who can be reached by comics. That comics can draw them into the world of reading. (I was a late reader, too, but once I got started I was insatiable.) I know, now, that there are people beyond comics fans who are beginning to appreciate the craft of this art form. That the blood, sweat, tears and solitude required to produce a comic book does not go unnoticed.

Today feels like the first warm day after a long, cold, gray Canadian winter. It feels like I’m popping out new leaves all over. This season won’t last forever, though, so I’m making the most of it, writing like crazy. Writing my first comic in quite a while. I don’t know where it will end up, but I know it will find a home somewhere.

Thanks to everyone who bought the book, reviewed the book, hosted a signing, and helped spread the word, A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel debuted at #2 on the New York Times Hardcover Books bestseller list! The attached graphic and link say it’s #1–for 12 blissful hours I thought I had it clinched–but there was a mistake, and the top spot actually belongs to Chris Ware. No shame in losing to one of the greats!

Many of the cartoonists on the graphic books lists this week are people I’ve known for years, and it’s an honor to stand in the spotlight with them. Again, thank you for making one of my dreams come true.

If you look closely at the cover of the book you’ll see that the illustrations I used for this banner are the three tiny silhouettes under the title. I thought that was a waste of some nice inks, so I’m glad I was able to repurpose the artwork here. The banner is 33″ x 80″, so I scanned in the artwork, dumped it into Illustrator, converted it to a vector image with Live Trace, blew it way up and tossed some colors in there. The cursive lettering I did by hand; it’s a combination of my own handwriting and handwriting from an old notebook I bought that contains 200 pages of handwritten home ec notes. The type is my old standby Times New Larson, which John Martz put together for me some years ago.

So it’s been almost a year since I last blogged. I signed into WordPress yesterday to find a big mess, e-mailed my web designer Sarah Becan (also a talented cartoonist!) and learned that my site had been hacked! It’s fixed now, and here I am.

Here’s a rundown of what I’ve been working on.

1) A Wrinkle in Time. The book’s finished! Inked, lettered, colored (by Dicebox‘s Jenn Manley Lee), copyedited and probably somewhere overseas being printed. It will be out on October 2nd through Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and I’ll be here and there promoting it. Stay tuned! Here’s the cover:

2) Who Is AC? This one’s close to being finished–artist Tintin Pantoja is finishing up tones and colors, and we’re working on the cover. It’ll be out Spring 2013 from Atheneum Books for Young Readers. More on who AC is when we’ve got a release date.

3) Bitter Orange. I wrote a short film which I’ll be shooting in June, just in time for my 2-year anniversary of moving in Los Angeles. Sometimes it feels like directing a short is a prerequisite for living here, but that’s not to say I’m not MEGA EXCITED about mine and all the inspiring people I’m getting to work with! It’s set in Hollywood during Prohibition. And don’t worry, it’ll end up online eventually. Here’s one of the storyboards, which were drawn by Jen Wang of Koko Be Good fame.

4) Ice cream. I attended the Penn State Ice Cream Short Course in January and have begun posting original ice cream recipes over at my Ice Cream Log. My most recent flavor is Chocolate-Covered “Aunt”, which was inspired by A Wrinkle in Time, and I’ve started making vegan ice creams, too! Eventually I hope to write an ice cream cookbook.
